When I tried to install that, my computer died. And so I had to uninstall it and go back to Windows. Boo.

Oh boo :( It all worked quite wonderfully for me, picked up my excel sheets nicely and generally had me deleting my copies of word and suchlike within minutes :)

Helloooo
Tell me about it then?

A free office suite package, I've known about it for ages but in the spirit of keeping my new PC legal decided to install it.

It replaces (and can read/write) word/excel/etc documents.

Very nice, I like it.

What about StarOffice?

From: [identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com
Well Staroffice a) costs $79 and b) is for Linux.

What, it's not free anymore? I have it on cd.

Looks like I looked at a bad link. StarOffice is now built from OpenOffice anyway, they're virtually the same thing it seems.

It's not just for Linux, ol' buddy! :o) Prior to upgrading to OpenOffice.org 1.1 I was using StarOffice 6.0 (available for Windows, Linux and Solaris, and an alias of OpenOffice.org 1.0).

OpenOffice.org 2.0 should be a big improvement in terms of speed and, er, not looking like a Windows 95 app, and a release candidate should be available in March/April...

Groovy, will keep my beady eye open for it :)

I've downloaded it to the PC in the bedroom, but have not had a chance to take it for a test-flight. What are your first impressions?

I'm not sure if I'll use it because of the problems with exchanging complex Docuements with embedded tables and spreadsheets

More complicated spreadsheets I'd be a little wary of using on it, but so far it seems fairly slick and pretty rugged.
And it's freeeeee! ahem.

...and legal too!

You're not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth then? ;@)

Nope, I generally try and pat it on the nose, feed it some sugar and say "Good horsie."

...and then it follows you home and is you and your roses' friend :@)

Btw if you've ever wondered about using linux but thought it was too damn strange:

www.ubuntu.com (possibly org/or net)

Very friendly, and based on debian so pretty powerful under the hood too.

Oh I've shellscripted and hacked my way through linux and unix before (well, about 10 years ago, eeep!) just I have no real reason to use linux since the principal apps I use (games) aren't particularly linux friendly!

I like OpenOffice, I have it on my laptop (PII 266 / 160MB RAM / Linux, so it isn't a resource hog really) and will probably put it back on my PC because I HATE HATE HATE DESPISE DETEST HATE EVIL NASTY Microsoft Office.

Well with my nice new PC I wanted an office app and wasn't going to fork out 100 odd quick for the latest gawdawful version of M$office. :)

I installed that on my new computer when it came - wouldn't swap it for M$ Office at all now. I'm determined that my Microsoft affiliation starts and stops with Windows - everything else they do I can live without, including Hotmail and MSN.
