But which surface??? Concorde is equipped with both conventional rudder, but lacks flaps and also conventional ailerons and elevators. Instead it is fitted with elevons - a surface designed to control the aircraft in both pitch and roll.

Unfortunately for Concorde, these various moving bitties had a rather nasty habit of falling off....

You are an aileron!



The ailerons are used to bank the aircraft; to cause one wing tip to move up and the other wing tip to move down. The banking creates an unbalanced side force component of the large wing lift force which causes the aircraft's flight path to curve. Without you most flights would be in straight lines and ultimately rather doomed. Horah for you!
