I really loathe insects (sorry [livejournal.com profile] blackmetalbaz) at the moment ants and thunderbugs are top of my annoyance list.
To divert myself from their crawling annoyance I decided to calculate - roughly - how many of the things are around the average wheat field.

For purposes of this we'll take the average field (and infected area) to be a square mile

Now, I have a 2x1 yard desk and I'll assume that this also covers (say) about a yard above it. A quick count over the desk reveals (after I opened the window) no less than 10 bugs crawling over it within the space of 10 minutes.

We'll give the bugs a ceiling of 10 yards up from ground level (wind, superhero tendancies etc) which means that in our sample area we have...

1760/2 * 1760 * 10 * 10 bugs = 154,880,000

In other words too bloody many of the little buggers.

I don't think that works if all the bugs arn't on your desk for all the 10 minutes, if one bug sits on your desk for five minutes and then goes and sits on your neighbours (ie another bit of the field) I think your method counts the damn thing twice. But I'm too tired to work it out
