I really loathe insects (sorry [livejournal.com profile] blackmetalbaz) at the moment ants and thunderbugs are top of my annoyance list.
To divert myself from their crawling annoyance I decided to calculate - roughly - how many of the things are around the average wheat field.

For purposes of this we'll take the average field (and infected area) to be a square mile

Now, I have a 2x1 yard desk and I'll assume that this also covers (say) about a yard above it. A quick count over the desk reveals (after I opened the window) no less than 10 bugs crawling over it within the space of 10 minutes.

We'll give the bugs a ceiling of 10 yards up from ground level (wind, superhero tendancies etc) which means that in our sample area we have...

1760/2 * 1760 * 10 * 10 bugs = 154,880,000

In other words too bloody many of the little buggers.

No no, way more than that. They can make nests in a wheat field, but not in your desk.

Ah, but isn't part of the problem that they're all over your desk the fact that farmers (nasty non-conservationist-types) use lake of pesticides on their fields and bug-resistant crops. So no bugs at all in fields to feed the pretty little birdies, but lots migrating to the relative safety of your desk : D

At least they give the swallows something to do! Just think how bored they'd be if there weren't any thrips for them to eat.

I don't think that works if all the bugs arn't on your desk for all the 10 minutes, if one bug sits on your desk for five minutes and then goes and sits on your neighbours (ie another bit of the field) I think your method counts the damn thing twice. But I'm too tired to work it out

Butbutbut! I found a really cool beetle crawling up my curtain today! He had a really small head and was waving his antennae really enthusiastically! I like beetles. They're not as good as spiders obviously though.

Wasps on the other hand are evil buzzing little bastards. Can we kill them all please?

I can't stand spiders, I definately have at least mild arachnophobia.
Wasps and Hornets can all burn, horribly horribly.
