Thinking of films now.

Think think think.

Back to sequels again, I will up my respectable sequel count now to a tentative three; these being... (in order of respectability)

Alien/Aliens
X-Men/X2
Batman/Batman returns

Are there any other sequels that are at least as respectable as the first? And no, I don't count (from my own point of view at least) Reloaded in this. Also films definately pre-planned as multiple releases don't count (Qv. Kill Bill, Lord of the Rings)

Erm, Robin said, preplanned sequences don't count...

I dispute the (widely held) belief that the sequels were planned. I can believe that some of the back-story was worked out, but Star Wars : A New Hope was such a departure and such an uncertain thing that I can't believe that it was intended to make the sequels, even if Lucas had a rough idea about what was to be in them.

Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones bear that out - whilst the general sweep may have been planned, it doesn't stand up that the plots were sorted in any detail at all.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Desperado perhaps. Neked Gun 2 and a half definetly. T2. Dunno if you're counting the Scream stuff. Haloween II perhaps. I would say that Die hard with a venegence is better than Die hard II, Die harder. Same comment regarding Back to the Future 2 and 3. For A Few Dollas More is far superious to A Fist Full, in my opinion. Leathel Wepons arn't bad and let us not forget Dr Jones!

Scream I wouldn't count as a good film in the first place; but that's personal preference ;)
T2... good point indeed.
Dr. Jones, of course... so much for they don't make decent sequels! Must buy that DVD set :)

I second Desperado. Once Upon a Time in Mexico is possibly better than the first.

Mission Impossible/MI2? The second definitely surpasses the first.

Desperado is the sequel to El Mariachi, Once Upon A Time in Mexico is the third of the series, and yes they all rock (although I like the first two the best myself).

By means of starting a deviant thread, how about good films where the sequels were particularly abysmal?

To kick this one off, I suggest The Crow: City of Angels, and Highlander II.

Far, far too many of these...

I'd definately say T2 and Godfather personally.
I've also heard good things from a friend about Bad Boys II, but then he is a Will Smith fanatic so he might be slightly biased.

Now to work out whether sequels are on the whole better or worse, you need to ask of the worst sequels that people can think of.
My contributions to that would be From Dusk till Dawn II: Texas Blood Money and Universal Soldier 2: Straight to TV!

Without a doubt, for me at least, the worse is Highlander II

Seconded.

I preferred T2 to the first one though, in fact that's what I came in here to post. Sorry, does that make me some kind of philistine? :)

Sad i know
