As you guessed your post was the trigger for my comment; but it wasn't entirely you, your post just made me think back to a lot of other people have been saying. "Oh I'm not interested in the Jubilee or the monarchy at all." and then proceed to talk about it for the next half hour.
The monarchy gives me a extra day holiday this weekend, that'll do for me - then again I'm a cheap tart.
"How amazing that the language of a few thousand savages living on a fog-encrusted island in the North Sea should become the language of the world."
A lot of stuff will probably be closed. I was seriously considering trying to work it for a day in lieu, then claiming I was doing so as an anti-royalist statement. Inevitably, I didn't get round to it.
Holidays are always better when other people are working.
Probably will be, but it'll give me a couple of extra days to clean up the house and garden, which are well overdue. I'm sure plenty of shops will be open, in the glorious spirit of capitalism, when they realise not everyones going to be watching the Jubilee and it's a few days after payday...
Sorry to interrupt, cunning linguist here, but the language of those savages has very little to do with the English of today. As much has you might hate it, modern English is closer to French than old English. ;o) All those conquerors brought their languages with them and forced the locals to adopt.
The "you" was more directed to English people in general rather than you personally. Besides, I thought you liked Germans, at least a particular one who's going to visit soon? ;o)
Well, if you ever have the chance to visit when I'm over there, you'll always be welcome and I'll show you the wonders of beer and sausage. Then again, you don't like beer which might be a bit of a problem as there aren't really any particularly indigenous spirits (fruit spirits, maybe).
