LAN ftw. I pay for game I don't expect to see fucking ads in it, EA have yet again shown they don't give a shit about the games but just want to milk whatever cash cow they've bought up recently. Just to preempt any "game companies are business" comments, well duh! However that doesn't mean they can't care about the games and the impact corporate decisions will make. Take a look at all the companies that aren't selling ad space in their games.
It's a max 64 player, on line game with unlockable content. The unlocks basically *make* the game, as the basic loadouts are... bland. LAN is a fine option, but I'm sure they joy will wane quickly.
I agree that EA are mercenary bastards who are out to milk every penny from consumers (and lets not forget the scandal about their developers).
The bottom line is no-one else is making BF2142. The nearest equivalent is Quake Wars and that's a way away yet.
Sadly I think that if you don't want ads in your games you're not going to have many games to play in future. I don't agree with it either, but the majority that choose to play anyway, just like the majority who watch ITV despite ads and who still use the web, will only serve to convince companies that this is the way to go.
I'm going to do my best to try and firewall the ad server away from me though! Hopefully if it can't access a site to retrieve ads, you won't get any.. (and it won't send them my details)
