It was a good set - even if I had to sleeep part-way though.

I would have fallen asleep, too. ;oÞ
(the exceptions being Kreuzdammer and Skinny Puppy)

Remind me to make similar comments when you next do a set ;)

You wouldn't be able to sleep because of the noise. ;oÞ

Seriously, whatever rocks your boat. Having a full dancefloor speaks for you, too.

My attitude to DJing is completely different, regardless of musical taste.
Unless it's advertised as a retro thing, a set should be varied and at least 2/3 current with a few classics thrown in. I see myself as a messenger of new music, as new material needs to be advertised.

If a club is advertised as Goth/Industrial/Dark 80s and 70% of what you hear is bleeding 80s (instead of 30), something is wrong.

I've tried to introduce completely new stuff. Sometimes I have tried to bludgeon a track or band I thing is great into people. Results have been mixed, but never as great as I'd like. At the end of the day boots on the dancefloor is what counts.

There's an argument that any goth is by definition retro. I don't necessarily hold to that but...

Of course we both know what happens to a club that tries to be too experimental. I don't want to take the Calling there. Yes, there should be more new stuff than is currently played. But there are limits.

I object to you, as a DJ and as an occasional Calling DJ, stating that the music "is rubbish". You are of course welcome to have an opinion that it is rubbish but stating that as fact rather than opinion (either in forums that you don't believe I read, or on forums where I have no right of reply) strikes me as unprofessional.

Counter argument: During my last Calling set, I played among others tracks by Samsas Traum, Lluther and Van Langen and had a full dancefloor on a rather quiet night (less than half of the amount of people who were there last night). I had a few quiet moments during the harsher bleep I played but I put that down to the low attendance that night because lots of people danced during the bleep bit Loki played last night.
If I faced an empty dancefloor with all the tracks I play at the Calling, I'd see your argument but the amount of people I get either asking about what the tracks were or congratulating me on my choice of music afterwards gives me confidence not to conform to the masses.

Also, a guest DJ (in my opinion, at least) should offer a different perspective, not copy the sets the regulars play.

As to the rubbish comment, I was voicing a personal opinion of what I felt that night, in my personal LJ, not as part of a review or in a specific goth forum, just like I made negative comments about that new Robin Hood series or other things I didn't like.

I'd also point out that you were there for only part of the night. Variety is mainly in the choice of DJs, not in any particular set. You probably wouldn't have liked anything you missed either, but the variety was there.

But in any case you admit yourself there was sufficient variety that there was something you found at least "acceptable". Given you're not going to like most of the music there I'd call that a pretty good hit for a third of the night.

I'd call almost two hours (and looking at Robin's set, another hour or so I wasn't there) without anything striking my fancy not very good variety and I pride myself on a broad musical taste.
Just like I won't play 100 minutes of stompy bleep, I don't expect anyone else play tired, overplayed (again, my opinion) music for that amount of time.

As you say above, goths tend to be retro and inert but there's no reason for not trying to kick them a bit and the success of my occasional sets proves that.

I DJ for mood; work with requests given and try to keep the same sort of feeling flowing, this set wasn't as smooth transition-wise.

I would of liked to add a few wierd tracks but being the first one of the new term I thought that I'd stick to popularly known stuff to make sure that everyone knew something and the club got a good feel first time.

Good set, I'd have danced with a few exceptions - time for a drink and a wee so that's OK.
On BBC6 mid morning the DJ has an indie disco section where they hark back to the indie discos of the nineties and pay tribute alphabetically. I used to DJ at an indie disco called Grinder in a Squat venue in Utrecht from 1994 - 1997 so this is a subject close to my heart.
We would take pride in mixing Dead Kennedies with Abba, Delmonas or Cramps with Therapy, Public Enemy with Depeche Mode. I can't believe that's 10 years ago now.
Don't go away, I will get round to comming to the Calling. It's very Calling me. Just let me have this baby.
