A word to the wise, the first offer will take the piss (in the hope that you are desperate/ignorant enough to take it)- reject it if you can afford to wait.
Added to oilrig's comment, check with a neutral source (either the maker or the AA, for example) what the average current value of your model/year is as that's what you should get from the insurance if it's a writeoff.
The damage estimate for my wrecked Fiesta was done by an independent assessor through the Ford garage (who also took care of the scrapping etc) and it included the current value. You car was in good nick so it should be relatively high.
