I'm just wondering how long it'll be before Apple decide to release the Mac OS on it's own for install on any intel machine so it can compete directly with Microsoft on any base unit
GUI = Graphic User Interface. A system like windows that allows you to control the computer with the desktop icons and mouse type interface rather than typing stuff in.
And how easy would it be to get someone (you?) to add more hard drive to my desktop? It's a 2001 Dell something-or-other running XP with a measly 20Gb (although I'm sure I ordered the 40Gb turbo, but it's so long ago now I can't utterly remember.....)
Should be pretty easy, adding an additional hard drive is the easiest option, probably best to have a look inside the machine before doing it to see what would fit. I could add a drive if you need :)
If you've only got the one drive then more than likely you'll have a cable free (or they're dead cheap to buy if not, I possibly even have a spare) razornet was wooing about some nifty deals they've got on 250 gb drives at the moment, poking him could be an idea. If not Dabs would be the place to look. They have a 160gb drive for 47 quid, at a brief glance.

ie we've made it easy for Mac users to switch to Windows permanently, albeit perhaps accidentally.
