Feb. 9th, 2006 09:39 amWater ran down from the roof like a waterfall, splashing onto the road as the cars rolled past in the grey half-light of the flickering lamposts.
The cigarette died in my fingers, the last few whisps of smoke curling away before I could tease a last drag from the stub. I flicked it away and into a puddle.
A faint flicker of lightning in the distance brought the street into sharp relief just as a large car glided to a gentle stop in front of me, a wake of water following it and washing onto the sidewalk.
It was a old style mercedes, blacked out windows and shining chrome. No sign or hint of who might be inside at all.
The passenger window slid slowly down in precise electrical pace. A pair of dark, long lashed eyes regarded me above bee-stung crimson lips hidden behind a black lace veil that hung from a small black hat.
I took a pace forward, the rain still falling, but not into the window as the eyes watched me. My mouth curled into a half smile as I lifted another cigarette up to my mouth.
"Got a light?" I asked, the noise of the rain muffling my words, but there was no reply, instead the door clicked quietly open a half-inch and invited me in.
