Jan. 30th, 2006 10:38 amMusic is divided, categorised and argued about by Genre; "Is this goth?" "What is goth?" "Pass the cloves." but I'm leaning towards not listening to music by genre anymore, but by mood1.
I doubt it'll be easy, given the amount of music I have on my hapless computer, but ultimately I'd like to have music keyed to moods; a checkbox like system for each track that indicates that this is music for relaxing, music to wake up to, music to go to sleep to... or whatever.
This would make much more sense given what I want from music, which - I have decided - is essentially to have my own soundtrack.
Given the option I would have music around me 24/7, a kind of soundtrack of my life; with my music collection filling the playlist.
Could I live without silence? Well, if not music then the gentle sounds of the waves or the wind... or rain on the windows; music isn't just artifical afterall, it's any sound with form. Hrm. Yes, that'll do.
Silence can go get a cheese bagel. While it's about it, I'll have one too.
1 Except techno, that is a mood, well for me anyway.

rather than using the normal genres that a band would be assigned to, I have tracks grouped into rough catagories and use the notes field for additional stuff like "nighttime". Itunes then automatically builds playlists for me based on these moods/categories/notes.
Most of it's not been properly categorised yet, but I'm working on it
