Jan. 13th, 2006 08:37 amText is, as I have observed before, a very bad way to express things when it comes to emotional content.
Technical, descriptive and logical information is all handled very well through this medium but emotions definately are not, chiefly (I believe) because for each person emotions are subtly different, a sum total of feelings and experiences that have build up over the (n) years the subject has been in existance.
As by way of example, this might mean for some that have lived longer that certain emotions are sharper because they have experienced them more often, or they could become run down, worn around the edges and more 'ah yes well' as they are experienced; dulling them down.
As a way of examining this I invite you to fill in the following poll to determine 'feelings' given the following seed phrases:

Date: 2006-01-13 09:33 am (UTC)Take me. I personally hate fireworks. I love aircraft and i love cold rice pudding... others would be completely the opposite depending upon life experience. You are your experiences, that defines the way you use language. Language itself is not factual until the actual terms are set in stone, for instance a "bit" to the geek is well defined and technical.. however the layman interprets this word to mean "a small amount" or similar.

Date: 2006-01-13 11:06 am (UTC)The DSE212 looks promising; have to see if I can convince my company to fund me for it ;)
Which would be for next year since this year has closed...

Date: 2006-01-13 12:12 pm (UTC)I know it says that, but through my elite insider knowledge(TM) I discover that the first week scheduled for study of DSE212 this year actually begins 28th January, so the course hasn't really started yet. If you're particularly keen (and don't want to wait a whole year) you could try ringing up the OU advice line (0870 333 4340) or the regional centre for the East of England (01223 364721) and asking to talk to someone about course registration - you may well be able to persuade them to register you anyway for this year's course (as a tutor I usually get late students assigned to my group until mid-February!).
