I read it last month. Very good. I'm trying to borrow some more of Banks' stuff (mustn't buy books, no room in the car for anything else).

The phonetic style of one of the characters really annoyed me at first, but he became my favourite :)

Yes, I had trouble reading those pages, but he had the most vivid personality.

I got a job thanks to that book. The one that involved me moving to Cambridge, in fact.

No secret. I had, in the miscellaneous-other-crap bit of my CV, mentioned that I'd been involved (as a member of SFSoc) in organising conventions with authors such as (and I'd thought for a moment about which ones people were most likely to have heard of) Michael Moorcock and Iain Banks. The first part of the interview was technical, and fairly hairily exacting (it seemed to involve trick questions, but actually I found out later that I was probably being pushed as hard as possible to see if I'd eventually say I didn't know rather than start guessing - I did). The second part was being shown around by someone else, who started off with "So you've met Iain banks then? What's he like?" He was in the middle of reading Feersum Endjinn at the time and was a fan generally, so we just talked Banks for twenty minutes.

Usually a good sign for an interview, chatting about things like that.
My previous jobs' interview involved a half hour chat about the pubs in the area with my boss.

For stuff happening locally in Chicago over the weekend, you can always check out [livejournal.com profile] chigoth. I highly reccomend Saturdays at NEO, as well

Agree to differ on that, I think. I love Bank's sci-fi, but that was by far the weakest, in my mind. Mmm... Culture

Thats the next choice of book for me, probably Excession

Excession is cool if you're already into the Culture. Amazing book. Player of Games and Consider Phabius are good Culture 'starters'.

Read them both :) Consider Phabius is one of my favourites ever.
