I had a good conversation over the weekend over the concept of triple stuffed beasties, that is a pheasant inside a chicken inside a turkey - or similarly.
This begs the question of course, exactly how far could you take this... well, taking commonly (well, normally) eaten avians only, in rough order of size... I think...
A quail inside a partridge inside a duck inside a pheasant inside a chicken inside a turkey inside a goose inside an emu inside an ostrich. Thats nine... did I miss any?

With all this talk of fowl I think duck pancakes will have to be my birthday tea :)

But, why?

That you even asked that question shocks me. A huge beastie of cooked avian glory in the oven the size of Kansas steaming with multiple meats? What could be better?

but cooking times would be insane and probably not very practical (the inner birds coming out either over- or undercooked)

Ah, but you add l;iberal amounts of stuffing / fat as you stuff, and then roast extremely slowly for a day or so and it all comes out succulent : )

A friend did 5 last Christmas - turkey, goose, chicken, duck, partridge, quail.

Don't forget snipe, woodcock, pigeon, plover, various sizes of ducks (from smallest teal to largest shelduck), larks (not entirely legal now, but used to be consumed in Olden Days - actually the Italians still eat Robins in places)

Why limit yourself to birds? Just think what you could cram into a blue whale? You could even do an endangered species one?

BTW I have an idea to do a Summer Party at the Farm that amongst other things will involve a fire-pit, a hurdle, some baling wire and a whole lamb for the roasting! Interested?

That's a definite yes from me!

I think it would have to be a fair sized lagoon and a fair sized fuel/air BBQ!

hehe, good idea, use a railway rail as a spit and spit roast it!

It's a traditional English dish, in fact.

A local butchers does three-bird specials over Xmas. Very nice it is two.

You could maybe squeeze a wren on the inside!

Wren, woodcock, pheasant/duck large chicken or goose, turkey.

Hmm... sparrow, sparrow hawk and then work your way up rare bords of prey until you end with golden eagle and then condor!

Date: 2005-01-17 05:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com
The logical step after condor would be llama.

Hmmm, wonder what llama tastes like. I had goat over the weekend which I'd never had before, very nice it was too!

"Llama makes good stews, burgers, sausages, cold cuts or smoked ham. Alpaca, a more-tender type of llama, comes as bistek llama, a grilled tenderloin with quinoa sauce, or Creole style, with tomatoes and onions."
From here.

A three-bird Xmas dinner, or a variety of near-extinct species?

Hmmm... Might be my PC, but I can never see your LJ replies to comments. I can only read them on my E-mail receipt.

Not sure. I can see everyone else's comments, but blank white pages where yours should be with not even a lil' penguin at the side of the page.

It's the same on my work and home PCs. Running Internet Exploiter. V5, I think. I may try it with Nutscrape and see what that makes of it.

That reminds me, I must urge [livejournal.com profile] venta on with her plan to do something like this. She also managed to find a recipe which involved a pit roast, a camel, some sheep and 200 chicken. I suspect that the latter might require several people to assist with the munching though of!

Wren, Quail, Wood Pigeon, Guinea Fowl, Duck, Pheasant, Chicken, Turkey, Goose, Kiwi, Emu, Ostrich

There's a Russian version that includes Ortoline (small somgbird) in the middle, stuffed with a stuffed olive :)
