Ah, meritocracy, that's the word I was looking for...

And if I were ruling the country it would already be in the best possible hands, so no need to listen to the opinion of the masses.

I enjoy thinking of the ideals of a meritocracy. However my cynical and jaded side always ends up telling me that a meritocracy would never come to pass. Mainly due to the fact that those in power wouldn't like to consider the fact they may not be the most intelligent or amongst those who make the most effort in any given thing and so instead of reforming they will cling to power any way they can.

An adhocracy is also an interesting idea because it gives equal worth to everyone. Unfortunately I can't think of a way to make it a viable or stable form of government for prolonged periods of time without slipping into a quasi-state of anarchy.

Erm, what's the difference between democracy and republic?

A republic doesn't have a single absolute ruler, but isn't necessarily democratic; it could still be a meritocracy, plutocracy or theocracy.

All democracies are republics; not all republics are democracies.

Obvious example - the People's Republic of China. Not full representative democracy, but it's a republic because it doesn't have a king/emperor.

Exactly, that's why the presence of republic confused me, as it's a more generic term.

Maybe a chimpocracy? But no, I'm of the opinion you reap what you sow, so either he'll sort himself out (stop sniggering at the back) or he'll drag the country down into a pit of economic ruin, which might make them release why the rest of the world was saying Kerry was a better bet. Still I'm quite sure a few people in the US were of the opinion "Well the rest of the world wants Kerry, so I'm damn well voting for Bush."
