May. 10th, 2004 08:54 amWell home again, home again, jiggity jig.
Germany is a pretty nice country, and of all the places I've visited it's been the one that I've felt the most comfortable in, or at least it's felt the most familiar. Normally when I visit another country I like to look for differences or things that stand out, but there were only really three things. They drive on the other side of the road (surprise!), they speak German (surprise!) and they have dire Sunday trading laws.
The food is good traditional German food seems to tend towards quite rich grub, at least where I was, I had a huge shoulder of piglet on Friday and tasty chunks of Bambi on Saturday, plus a pretty nice milkshake.
The buildings are really nice too, the scenery is pretty impressive, lots of rolling forested countryside.
I'd like to go again sometime, I think.
The strangest thing of it all were the goths. I was expecting a fair proportion of cybers, but there were none - at all. Not even any hair extensions!
And also, not much makeup - not even nail varnish. On Saturday when we went out I only dabbed on some eyeliner quickly and I felt half undressed, but for the goths in the club it was very unusual to have any makeup at all.
And dancing, hoo boy.
German goths do the goth two step, all of them, absolutely every one of them. It doesn't matter if it's Fisherspooner, VNV nation or the Prodigy, they'll do the Goth two step. In carefully formed rows across the dance floor, it looks like line dancing and it's scarey.
I danced like a lemming on his final cocaine hit, as usual.
But, that said there were some goths with very nice outfits indeed.
Pictures will follow soon!

Disclaimers
The trading laws used to be a lot more strict only a few years ago (9-6 weekdays, 9-2 Saturdays, no Sunday trading at all). Over the last 10 years, it's become gradually better.
Again, I apologise for the style and behaviour of the goths in my country. ;o)
