In an interesting diversion from the usual programming schedule I went to see Duchess of Malfi a play about intrigue, murder and sibling love rivalry. The set was very impressive and the whole flow of changes between scenes was extremely smooth; good use was made of the stage for poignant moments as well as larger scenes and in all it was quite interesting. The language was a bit of a barrier until I got to the
second half, as the terminology "Mine eyes dazell" and suchlike was a bit of a headache to follow although the basic plot was easy enough to follow by watching who talked to or stabbed who.
One thing that struck me during the break (mmmm ice cream) was that the parallel I was most drawing to the play was to the movie A clockwork orange not for the violence element, which were both done for entirely different reasons; but for the language, the most distinctive thing for me about the orange is the language of the film, and listening to a play written in language from a different era just rung similar.
There are a series of open air Shakespeare plays around the colleges next month, I think I might have to go and see them; a midsummer’s night dream and Romeo and Juliet (in full period costume!) rather appeal.
My appraisal in 20 mins... joy.
