This is a central hub in many conspiracies, but primarily in case anyone ever gets around to inventing a time machine, since this will stuff up any attempts to travel back with a big suitcase of cash any further back than a few years. They know, you know.
Also coins have a hive-like intelligence, already displayed by the fact that they mysteriously vanish from your pocket and wallet (occasionally they vanish entirely, leaving only vague memories of the night before and a hangover) to collect in some as-yet undetermined point. By replacing coin types in circulation the coins cannot build an effective organisation system to overthrow their controllers as they never know who will be next for the chop.
