For many many years Bladerunner was my favourite film and surely, it will always be one of my favourites. Not only the sci fi nature, the setting and the stunning performance by Rutger Hauer but more the examination of the self. Looking at one of the other two films I would list as my favourites, Contact, a wonderful film that examines belief and all that it entails, not just in the main character, but in the lunatic who kills himself, the patron who sponsers the project, the parson who falls in love with her; again, examination of the self.
But now, undoubtedly, although I denied it for ages, Fight Club is now firmly my favourite film ever, the name of this film alone put me off watching it for ages as I expected a shallow slugfest of a film that relied on blood, punchups and one liners to get screening. I couldn't have been further from the truth and in a lot of ways this film changed my life, or more importantly how I think about myself. And since how you define yourself is the starting point for defining how you look out to the world, my world view has changed because of it. This film is about self analysis, yes it is essentially from a male point of view but (I believe) the issues in many ways are cross gender, the whole idea and examination of modern life and what it entails, the struggle for self-definition and asperation to be something we, simply, cannot be are it's message, along with a lot of others. The whole film itself is insightful, thought provoking, twisted, scarey and eye opening and it's the one film I know I can watch again and again, because each time I watch it I remember pieces of myself I learnt because of it and usually I find something new to read inside as well.
