i'll be honest and say I've never had any trouble with windows media player. you need to poke it to do mp3's but it works in teh end.

please don't hit me for using a M$ product!

There's a neato tutorial on Ubernet or Hydrogenaudio.

EAC more reliably tells you about ripping problems than CDex in my experience.

iTunes thirded... because it'll also give you free songs each week in the store (though you need to use itunes to listen to them...)
