Flavourings, colourings and preservatives. The three cornerstones of any good diet. Forget protein, fat content and nutritional value, without the three basics everything else falls by the wayside, makes an ill judgement about when to cross the road and then gets flattened by a sixteen wheeler truck.
Today I will mostly be getting my sugar rush from Drumsticks. Raspberry and milk flavoured chews, rather than the lollies themselves. Which saves you seconds of precious time when you are chewing around the stick, when you could be unwrapping another one and just eating it.

That said raspberry and milk is a pretty strange flavour, so I submit to you - the panel at large - what is the strangest flavour you know of for a foodstuff to be. Now, I'm not talking about any bizarre cheese and onion crisp with cornflakes and gravy sandwiches that you may have created, oh no. To be valid here the flavour should be entirely sold in one pack of a ready to eat foodstuff - preferably confectionary... so, any takers?

You don't think your sugar addiction might be why you keep getting headaches all the time?
I take it your GP has already checked for diabetes? Do you feel thirsty a lot and have trouble sleeping?

I actually very rarely get headaches, I've not been checked for diabetes but I don't think I get that thirsty and I sleep like a log :)

Hang on, I think I'm confusing you with [livejournal.com profile] hampsterboy, though you're both terrible sugarfiends.

Not confectionary, but... roasted vegetable cottage cheese. Yuck!

I've never had any dietery related problems; I suspect my digestive system must be some kind of freak of nature.

Vanilla Ice Cream flavoured Monster Munch is probably the weirdest flavour I've come across in recent history.

The maker was apparently sued over those by people thinking they were actually made from hedgehogs. Silly people.

sorry. almost sued.

How odd. I can understand wanting to sue if you had eaten something that you thought wasn't hedgehog but actually was. To object to not having been given real hedgehog seems a bit weird though.

They tasted pretty much like Worcestershire Sauce flavour to me. Google doesn't appear to know, but does say that they first went on sale on February 17th 1984. (The main point AIR was that each packet bought generated a contribution to some hedgehog saving charity.)

Ah. Well that at least makes sense of the idea of having hedgehod flavour crisps which actually have nothing to do with hedgehogs at all.

But even less sense of the idea of somebody wanting to sue them.

Google knows nothing and I don't remember hearing anything at the time, so I suspect it's one of a) someone failed to read the packet, assumed they *did* have real hedgehog in, and complained about cruelty to the poor critters, b) an urban legend claiming (a) was the case. (Snopes doesn't know either.)

I think there *was* a particular interest in saving hedgehogs at the time - ISTR various pieces about the right food to leave out, building hedgehog road-crossings etc.

This has prompted me to do my semi-annual search for Fish 'n Chips flavour crisps. With somewhat more success this time:

http://snackspot.org/thread.php?story=0308260955cas
http://www.britdepot.com/wholesale/prods/WM115600.html

So I now know who the manufacturer was, and they were still being sold at least fairly recently. Unfortunately that's britdepot's old website, and they seem to have discontinued them. Grrr.

Oh well, they probably wouldn't taste the same without the old packet anyhow.

I had this discussion with somebody else recently, forget who, and they were convinced that the crisps really were hedgehog flavoured and that it was a delicacy in Japan or something.

The thing I read (most probably a hoax, but you never know. people are weird after all) claimed that they worked with a group of people who did actually eat headgehogs and created a chemical flavour that tasted the same.

Possibly it was over there, but our version, I'm pretty certain, wasn't real. As I said, at the time it tasted exactly the same as Worcestershire Sauce flavour crisps which were also readily available back then. Quite nice actually. But not even remotely what I'd imagine hedgehog tasting like.

if you're that desperate there's plenty of roadkill to scrape up and try cooking. Wouldn't suggest it though

Some of the stuff you can get in Japan is pretty frikkin' wierd. The mustard flavoured dried peas, for example.
