It's a radically different film; I hear talk than Tarantino intends to splice them together eventually so that they can be shown as 'they were meant to be' (a 3-4 odd hour epic) but as they stand the styles and pace of the two films are very, very different.
The first is intense, action packed and with massive long logistical fight scenes.
The second is slower, careful, with more dialogue and the fights - when they happen, are brief and quick (comparitively).
I recall someone mentioning sometime that the second is meant to have the style of a Western, rather than the HK esk pace of the first, and it's true. Is it good? Yes, in a more quiet way that the first. It gives you more story and could almost be seen as a documentary for the first, in a way, giving all the story behind the passion and the violence of the first film.
It's worth watching if you've seen the first one, but the first - in my opinion - remains definately the best. The second is needed to fill in the cracks in the story.

With ya there - the 2nd movie is certainly much more of a character study, involving huge, long, involved conversations between several characters - usually face to face conversations between just two characters I noticed as well.

It's strange, but on reflection, if I hadn't seen the first movie, I think I may have thought the second movie to be boring. That's a big gamble on Tarantino's part, that you have to have seen the first movie to find the second one interesting.

I'll explain - as Rob says, the first movie contains all the fury, passion and violence, but those situations also provoke emotions very well - you end up liking the good guys and disliking the bad guys - not because you were told they were good or bad, but because of their actions.

The second film very much builds upon the first.

As for splicing them together? Hmmmmm. The opening scene in the second movie could work to join the two. I also noticed that when the Bride found the trailer (not giving away any other info as it'd be spoilers) the movie plays that squeling "Du du du du duuuuuu" music that was used in the first movies when she confronted a bad guy.

totally disagree that first is better - first is stylishly devoid of anything other than style and action, second is a layered and intricately constructed thriller! agree that they are totally different and would be hard to show back to back, but perhaps chapter splicing would make something better than the sum of the parts.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one; for me the first one was almost arthouse in it's depiction of the violence; I'm not one for gorey type films but KB 1 had my eyes popping.
