...if I seem a little heartless for a second, and I don't mean to be because I do understand the losses of the people who died or lost relatives on that day. But check that link for just a second...

The key phrase is... But the family, who asked to remain anonymous, had to agree not to sue the airlines or government in exchange for the pay-out.

Sue the airlines? Noone could even conceptulise that something like this would happen, and even so isn't it the lunatics fault who held the the plane up and smacked it into the building plus associated other lunatics who organised this (and subsequently got bombed into oblivion) or the government?

This musing was really more sparked by this is the world descending into a blame culture when the concept of an self-inflicted accident actually vanishing? Should judges be given a big fat 'common sense' card to smack people around the head with when (for example) they try to sue for things like this ? They're greasy burgers dammit, you eat lots of them you'll get fat, what do you expect?!

I'll maybe get flamed for this, but I'm in a pissy mood this morning, so I apologise.

I'm with you there

but this is probably because we're not American (with apologies to the exceptions who might read this).

I just wonder why they haven't sued gun manufacturers yet...

I believe it was tried.

I think it was thrown out after the gun manufacturers pointed out a disclaimer that came with all new guns, or something.

It's not just our wacky neighnours across the water however, although they are the ones that usually get the most media press - the playground incident was in England, where a woman was suing the local council for her child falling off a slide or something. The kid fell, the thing was metal... accidents happen, not being too harsh here. Dear me.
How long until people sue the national parks for falling out of a tree?

I suspect that any such case would be blaming the airlines for not having enough security to prevent the aircraft from being Hijacked. Yes, I know that's a stupid thing to sue for, but I wouldn't be suprised...

Hm, air security is usually provided by the airports, or not, as the case used to be in the US where you could simply walk onto the plane like onto a city bus. The lack of security on domestic flights was thing mostly critizised after Sept. 11.

Why do you expect to get flamed

I certainly dislike the idea of the nanny state, and the associated blame culture that doesn't allow for accidents, and assumes that it must be someones fault, and everyone is a victim.

Perhaps everything should be sold with a complete twazzock disclaimer on it,

We accept no responsibility for any injury sustained due the the user being a braindead twazzock

There you happy? :)

Seriously though, you're not being heartless, at least not to this American. September 11th was a horrorible day for this country, almost as horrible as seein' people turn our beloved flag into a cheap comodity just days after it happened. I have no doubt that many families suffered very hard over their losses, but I think they're damn selfish. If they truly wanted to honor the ones they lost, they wouldn't ask for money, which would benefit THEIR personal needs. If they were looking to memorialize their lost ones, they'd donate that money to a charity to help other people who are in desperately need in this country. What better way to remember them by using their money to save more lives?
