My beliefs on existence are pretty damn basic, one is born, one pays bills, one dies and becomes worm food. Now, quite a few of my friends have differing views from this from belief in an almighty(ies) magi(c)(ck)(etc) and a variety of spirits, thingamabobs and whatnots out there, all of which I just apply the nod and smile approach and don't tread on their toes about. Who am I to mess with peoples beliefs?*
This is one of the reasons I like the film Contact so much, the whole film for me hinges on this whole belief thing, one of the moments in the film sums things up perfectly for me; the lead character is being questioned about her faith (prior to being put into some wierdass alien transport thingy) and she says that she doesn't believe in God, and later on another character explains why he couldn't vote for her; "because I couldn't in all good faith vote for someone who believed the other 90%** of us are deluding ourselves". And so, I don't tread on toes and most importantly I believe that there is the possibility that I may, really and truly, be utterly and totally wrong. Spooks, spirits, ghosts and magi(c)(k)(etc) may well exist, and if I see anything to show me, then hell, I'll be ready to believe. In fact it would be nice to be shown that there is more than science keeping this whole of existence rolling along.
But until then, I'll live in my deluded world, and everyone else can live in theirs.
Because one things for sure, not everyone can be right***.
* To a point, if you believe that you should go around decapitating people and eating their juicy brains in order to gain immortality, I'm going to make an issue of this.
** Quoted as the percent of the world population that believes in some kind of divine entity or other, percentage may be incorrect, but it's 90%+
*** Multiple personal universe/reality bubbles aside...
