The lesser episode 2

Sounds good.

Only hoping the "brief appearance" of JarJar is when he gets gunned down in a hail of blaster fire...

"Miester gonna die?"
"Yes."

...is it really the best way to run a country, and indeed is there a good way to run a country. Before I go off on one I'll explain that I basically have "middle-liberal" political leanings, with the occasional wierd view. But. Democracy. Is it really a good thing? Is there a basic set of principals that should be fundamental to every country (human rights, medical aid, freedom of speech...) or will this entirely depend on the country?
This vague ramble has basically stemmed from the events in France. Now I'm not going to (directly) say that Le Pen was a good or bad choice for the voters over there, but he did poll 20% or so of the vote - which isn't exactly insignificant in a national vote, indicating that a good deal of the country has sympathy for his ideas or is making a choice to vote for him in protest against Chirac.
Policies have been made on less.
Take another political bugbear that's been annoying me, policy change - change of president/prime minster can mean a radical change of views for a country in a short space of time, take the Kyoto treaty in the U.S. for example, signed in one term and dismissed in the next - do you have any guarentee as to a countries consistancy? Not really.
If I signed a document four years ago saying that I'd agreed to something, then suddenly this year I decide to tear it up, that's hardly in the spirit of things is it? Agreements and policies change with the parties and the leader, as the media bites at their heels and various scandals, violence and accidents occur around the world.
Religion too likes to sink it's teeth into things; policies and ways of life in one country with heavy national religious practises (Eg. Saudi) mean that any practises outside that religion are illegal in that country - a religious state. Is that freedom? Do we need that freedom? Governing bodies and police forces need some powers, but the extremes at the other end (Qv. OJ possiblily) mean that lawers and money, freedom and individual rights become more important that those of the rest of the society.

These are just random thoughts really, fluttering around in my mind. Comments, opinions and corrections welcome; I don't claim to be right or all-knowing, just capable of thought.
