Music matters...

Is there a band that people express surprise that you like?

For me it's usually Carter USM, product of my sixth form years...

[identity profile] mattp.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
The Spice Girls, but I'm quite selective at what I listen to. I don't think there's a single band where I listen to all of the material. I've not listen to any for a number of months, since the Hard Drive Crash Of Doom in 2002.

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I like "Viva forever" but thats as far as I go to liking them :)

[identity profile] claire-smith.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, you're the same age as me, aren't you? Liking Carter is a product of my sixth form years too.

My shameful secret is Robbie Wiliams - I am a big fan of good pop music (yes, there is such a thing!) in general.

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think so, I'm of Jan 73 vintage.

Robbie Williams? Deary me!

Pop music? I listen to 80's stuff, I can't say anything in return!

Amorphis.

This is particularly true of those that know me more for my tastes in early music.

Erm, 'No one is to blame' is a great song

[identity profile] vulgarcriminal.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Howard Jones.

Yes, yes, I know....

[identity profile] davywavy.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
TigerTailz.

They're Grrr-eat!

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not even heard o' them...

Re: Erm, 'No one is to blame' is a great song

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I have a Howard Jones album, well two :)

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not heard o' them m'fraid.

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
The crime is country, the sentence is death.

[identity profile] scy11a.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
quiet, reserved, conservative type

But you are! : P

Ditto for me at work. Nobody can believe I'm an (ex)-DJ into all this crap we listen to regularly. Sad I still have to resort to NiN or the Sisters or the Cure to find something anyone has actually heard of. Although most of my pals like Swarf now : )

[identity profile] davywavy.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
They're glam-tastic!

[identity profile] scy11a.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
Carter *shudders*

They're from Farnborough don't you know *shudders again*
I grew up round there.

Other bands of a similar geographical bent (well, neighbouring Camberley) include the infamous Bros. Now will you stop liking them?

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
So you're saying the reasons for not liking carter are that you and Bros grew up in the same area? ;)

I seem to remember you played them once...

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
You be talking fancy wurds with me now boy!

Anything not "metal"

Specific examples that have caused comment or raised eyebrows are The Sugababes, All Saints, Alicia's Attic...

Hmmm, those are all distinctly female in nature, wonder if that's a subconscious help to the music? *smirk*

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
*clears throat*
Dixie Chicks just about but neither Lucinda Williams (Americana) nor Union Station (classic Bluegrass) are Country. So ner.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Them of covering AC/DC fame. You really need to expand your horizons more and come out of the 80s, man. ;oP

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well done, Sir! There's nothing disgusting about Americana, on the contrary.
Come to the December Octaine, and you'll get to hear some fine tunes. Or any Octaine, for that matter.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Erm, I help run Octaine, nobody's surprised at anything I play/listen to. This might be helped by the fact that very few people actually know the music I really like. :oP

[identity profile] raggedyman.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not trying to blag but I think I'm in the position of very very few people who know me being suprised by anything I listen to.

erm...

Mel C & Brian Adams doing 'Since you've been gone'??

Sparklehorse, The Gun Club, Uncle Tupelo, J Cash esq . . .

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No apologies needed for Alicia's Attic, they're great :)

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly buying ambient/euphoria stuff at the moment, none of which most people have heard of.

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know you do Oz, however if you suddenly proclaimed (for example) a deep and abiding love of Enemim I think people would be surprised.

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I know the -last- one...

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mel C AND Bryan Adams, oh dear...
zotz: (Default)

[personal profile] zotz 2004-10-26 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You've probably heard something by the Gun Club, as both myself and Patrick played them at Th'Calling.

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of his stuff isn't bad but there's no "deep and abiding love".
You can probably boil it down to "anything that's not Top40" with a few exceptions (Joss Stone, RHCP).

[identity profile] karohemd.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the best track either of them had done in years.
I used to be a big Bryan Adams fan but there really hasn't been anything really good since "Reckless" and that's been 20 years now...

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2004-10-26 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, more than likely then.

[identity profile] raggedyman.livejournal.com 2004-10-27 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the best track either of them had done in years

*nods*nods*
the best bit is that you can take it either as a loved-up 'ooh come home quick for a shag' song or a bitter 'why did we split up' one.
or at least thats my read on it.

[identity profile] raggedyman.livejournal.com 2004-10-27 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It rocks, accept it ;-)
