Profanity in a digital world

I'm not one for profanity, I am as likely to say 'Oh pigeons' if I hit my foot as anything else and I (hopefully) keep my casual swearing to a minimum. Now this is largely personal choice and (I believe) politeness as who am I to use words that are commonly accepted to be vulgar or rude, and manners again (I believe) are important and something that this world is sadly lacking these days... anyway, to my point, and by jingo I have one for once.

On Monday our wonderful sysadmins upgraded our mail server, no big deal there you might think, but with this they updated (I presume) the word block list. This is a system for scanning emails that arrive for profanity or words that are offensive etc etc. Now an email arrived this morning from a friend and it was flagged as 'offensive' I looked at it for several moments and couldn't for the life of me find any word that anyone would consider rude; but then memories clicked and my eyes alighted on the word 'nip', which can be of course considered a derogitory term for anyone of Japanese origin; but it is far more common in British parlance to be used as a term for a short quick movement action, or something similar. "I'll just nip outside." for example. Our wonderous mail server has again been reset to American slang terms - which means emailing someone to ask if they want a cigarette is going to be causing problems again.

But this brought back memories of a chat system I used to use eons ago called WBS (Web Broadcasting System) a wonderful place for online RP-related chat and all sorts of other things. Now on this chat system, somehow, someone found out that the word 'pati' was blocked, and the combined efforts of just about everyone I knew on the server failed to establish why, how or what exactly this word was slang for and in what language. To this day it remains a mystery to me, and likely everyone else that used WBS...

So, in a challenge to the world in general, what vulgar term and in what language (presumably, since it's likely not English) is 'pati' considered a vulgar word?
Theres a drink in it for anyone who knows - and two if you can quote source on why and where it is...

All I can think of is that 'Pati' means (jointly) 'husband' and 'lord' or 'master' in some Indian Languages. Perhaps this juxtaposition of ideas in a single word offended some of the more rabid feminists on the group?

It's the closest/best suggestion, so I guess you win!

Curses! Well I still have a chance at a drink if that character gets approved ;)

Oh and I have the original Fallout tactics discs back now if you want to borrow them

I'm just wasting my way through Medal of Honour, so after that, thankee.

Tell you what, double or quits on your character approval?

Done! False confidence may not be a virtue, but it's worth it for a chance at two drinks ;)
Time to dig out those incriminating photos of various people...

Ha! Those two pints shall be mine! If I show up to Cambs on Saturday you can buy me them then and get it over with.

I should say the same thing - and have a camera ready!

What - to record the unique instance of you buying a drink for someone else? ;p

Are you going to Gencon?

I intend to, but just for the sat/sun... although I still have no idea which weekend it is on as I keep forgetting

Do you think it could have been a mistyping of "paki"?

[identity profile] robinbloke.livejournal.com 2002-08-15 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
It was an American based site, so unlikely I'd believe since (afaik) that's English slang...

All google throws up is various links to thrash metal band sites and a few others in german. I suspect it's a mistyping, or perhaps there was just someone on the service called "Pati" they didn't like..

FWIW, my complete OED has never heard of the word either.

We were stumped for years (literally) on this one

I know that that sort of thing can be exceptionally frustrating. We had one installed here as part of a spam filter around the time that I was looking to move house. It meant that all the emails that we (Myself adn prospective housemates) were sending backwards and forwards discussing estate agents and our opinions on them disappeared, and it took a couple of days to work out what was going on.
On the puls side yours do get stored somewhere as opposed to consigned to write only memory.
Also, I've got an awful lot of people from Northern Ireland who mail me. The filter is practically across the board discrimination for anyone from there. Like we know how to talk proper.
